The Monarchy: Poorest Britons struggling for food

Part 2

Newly released figures show that millions among the poorest Britons are struggling to feed themselves and face malnourishment.

Official data showed that the poorest 10 percent in the UK, some 6.4 million people, including children, ate less than the average guideline rate of about 2,080 calories per day.

The data, released in a report earlier this month from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, showed that the poorest people spent 22 percent more on food costs in 2013 than in 2007 but they received 6.7 percent less food.

In this edition of The Monarchy, we will address the issue of poverty in the UK.

Concerned Citizens Warned of Fluoride Dangers in the ’50s, but We’re Still Drinking It Anyway

With renewed interest by activists, scientists and concerned citizens in removing fluoride from municipal water supplies across the country, it is useful to remember that fluoridation has always been controversial.

Even as use of the chemical was being introduced as a “benefit to teeth”, many people of the day were already armed with information to put them on guard and make them outraged at the ill conceived and perhaps nefarious scheme thrust upon the population. Read more + video.

France continues to protest against cops killing civilians

France continues to be roiled by protests against the often-deadly methods of their police force. The justice system has refused to file charges in the death of 69-year-old Algerian retiree Ali Ziri, who died while in police custody. The case has dragged on for 5 years, and many are appalled at yet another example of cops escaping punishment in the suspicious death of a civilian.

The Ali Ziri scandal keeps police brutality in France’s headlines. This autumn has already witnessed nearly three weeks of continuous protests following the death of a peaceful ecological demonstrator. It led to the arrests of hundreds of demonstrators and even government suppression of protests. One of these activists received almost immediately a shocking prison sentence of 8 months, which many believe is another attempt by the government to silence criticism.

France is not the only Western nation accused of widespread police brutality, and a separate protest was held in Paris to support the slain African-Americans in New York City and Ferguson, Missouri. The repeated cases of police brutality in the West prove that their security forces need to be scrutinized much more carefully. In France, these demonstrators say the legal system has to stop condoning police violence and the targeting peaceful protesters.

Thousands of Spaniards protest new security law

Thousands of people have taken to the streets in several Spanish cities to protest against a new security law.

According to the new law, offenses like burning the national flag and demonstrating outside strategic installations are liable to heavy fines. It also allows for the summary expulsion of migrants that try to enter the country illegally.

The largest protests were held in Barcelona, Bilbao and Madrid. There were other protests in smaller cities including Almeria, Granada and Valencia.

The Public Security Law has been heavily criticized by opposition parties and human rights groups as an attempt by the conservative government to control protests over its handling of the financial crisis.

But al Nusra Front, an al Qaeda-affiliate, isn’t Israel’s only threat from Syria. President Bashar al-Assad’s military, in a possible effort to bait Israel into its civil war to shore up Arab sympathies, has been lobbing mortars across the border.
