Greek parl. to recognize state of Palestine

Greek lawmakers are set to vote on recognition of Palestine as a state on Monday

Government sources say Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will attend the parliamentary session. The vote will serve as a symbolic move that will not be binding for the country’s government.

Last week, the Greek parliament's foreign affairs committee unanimously approved a motion to recognized Palestine, calling on the country’s government to do the same. The parliaments of other countries such as the UK, France, Spain, Ireland Belgium and Portugal have already recognized Palestine symbolically. Sweden, however, officially recognized Palestine last year.

In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly voted to upgrade the status of the Palestinians to that of a non-member observer state.
