President Rouhani to meet Fidel Castro in Havana

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani is on an official visit to Cuba aimed at expanding bilateral political and economic ties with the Caribbean island nation

Rouhani has held talks with Cuban President Raul Castro and is scheduled to meet his older brother and predecessor Fidel. The two presidents are expected to sign a number of agreements on various fields including trade and energy.

Upon his arrival in the capital Havana, Rouhani hailed Cuba as a friendly and revolutionary country. He said the two nations have been under pressure from certain powers for decades. The Iranian president was apparently referring to sanctions imposed by the United States.

Rouhani will fly to New York to attend the seventy first session of the United Nations General Assembly.
