Greek police clash with anti-Obama protesters

Clashes have broken out between Greek riot police and people protesting against visiting US President Barack Obama. Police used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.

The protesters took to the streets of Athens in defiance of a government ban on any public gathering. The rallies were organized by left-wing groups. They called on people to march against the US president as the main representative of imperialist forces. They also urged the protesters to clash with police in order to sabotage Obama’s trip.

The Greek capital is already on a security lockdown with central districts of the city, subway stations and tourist hubs out of access. The government has also deployed thousands of security forces.

Anti-US sentiment runs high in Greece which still remembers the Washington’s support for the Junta dictatorship in the 1960s and 70s.
