French authorities warn against circulating Macron leaks

French authorities have taken a harsh stance against circulating the leaked information from a massive hacking attack targeting centrist presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron's campaign.

Electoral authorities have warned that circulating the fraudulently obtained data could amount to a criminal offense. The internal documents of Macron’s campaign were spread online after France’s final day of campaigning came to an end on Friday night.

France’s election campaign watchdog has launched an investigation into the hacking. It’s also warned that some of the released documents could be fake. There are growing fears that the leaks could affect the outcome of the presidential run-off on Sunday.

Latest polls show that Macron has a support of 62-percent compared to 38-percent for his far-right rival Marine Le Pen in Sunday’s runoff vote.
