US not 'touching' al-Nusra terrorists in Syria: Russia

Russia's top diplomat describes al-Qaeda-linked Jabhat Fateh al-Sham formerly known as Nusra Front as the main problem in Syria’s Eastern Ghouta, criticizing the US-led coalition for NOT targeting the terror group.

Sergei Lavrov was speaking during a joint press conference alongside his Uzbek counterpart Abdulaziz Kamilov in Moscow. Lavrov also accused the U-S of seeking to partition Syria, saying the Astana peace process led by Iran, Russia and Turkey hinders Washington’s efforts in that regard.

He also questioned the effectiveness of the United Nations Security Council resolution on a 30-day truce in Syria. The Russian foreign minister said there are no guarantees that anti-Damascus militants will abide by the ceasefire.

Russia's Capital Is Leading the Charge for Blockchain Democracy

Even as Russia stands accused of meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, its national capital is taking a leadership role in making democracy more transparent.

Using an existing program called Active Citizen, the city of Moscow has been allowing residents to cast votes for measures ranging from the name of their new metro train to the color of the seats in a new sports arena. But in an effort to soothe people's concerns over whether to trust the city in its vote counting, it's added a private version of the ethereum blockchain to that project's architecture. Read more.

Qatar: Beyond the Blockade

On June 5th, 2017, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Egypt imposed a blockade on Qatar - closing their land, air and sea borders with it - accusing it of funding "terrorism" and fomenting regional instability.

The Saudi, Emirati and Bahraini governments told their citizens to return from Qatar. They also asked Qatari citizens who were visiting, studying or living in their respective countries, to leave for Qatar within 14 days.

This diplomatic move left Qatar partially isolated - economically, politically and culturally.

As this crisis continues without a solution, this film follows several people in Qatar to find out how they are facing up to life under blockade.

US transferred ISIL members to Afghanistan by helicopter: Russia

A high-ranking Russian official has accused the U-S military of allowing Daesh terrorists - who have been defeated in Syria and Iraq - to infiltrate Afghanistan.

The Russian envoy for Afghanistan says various witness accounts indicate that the terrorists are often transferred to Afghanistan by helicopters. Zamir Kabulov added that because the U-S and NATO fully control the skies over Afghanistan, there is every reason to believe they have a hand in the transfer, or at least refuse to confront such flights.

In 2001, the US and its allies invaded Afghanistan under the pretext of 'war on terror'. Some 17 years on, terrorism is still growing in Afghanistan. The Daesh terrorist group has recently established a foothold in eastern and northern Afghanistan and stepped up its attacks against civilian targets across the country.

Damascus stresses support for chemical probe

Syria has dismissed US chemical attack claims, calling the use of such weapons a crime against humanity.

Speaking at a U-N Security Council session, the acting charge d’affaires of Syria’s permanent delegation at the world body rejected the U-S claims as false and cheap. Munzer Munzer said Damascus supports any action taken by the UN to investigate the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

Munzer noted that Washington uses the chemical issue whenever it realizes that terrorist groups are in trouble in the face any progress by the Syrian army. Moscow has also accused Washington and London of using the issue to sabotage Russia’s efforts to find a political solution to the crisis ravaging the Arab country.

Tillerson raises specter of U.S. sanctions on Venezuelan oil

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - The United States is considering restricting imports of Venezuelan crude oil and exports of U.S. refined products to Venezuela, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Sunday, to put pressure on socialist President Nicolas Maduro to “return to the constitution.”

“One of the aspects of considering sanctioning oil is what effect would it have on the Venezuelan people? Is it a step that might bring this to an end more rapidly?” Tillerson said at a news conference in Buenos Aires, referring to Venezuela’s economic and political crisis. Read more + video.

Confessions of an Economic Hitman - John Perkins | Short Documentary

According to Perkins, he began writing Confessions of an Economic Hit Man in the 1980s, but "threats or bribes always convinced [him] to stop."

According to his book, Perkins' function was to convince the political and financial leadership of underdeveloped countries to accept enormous development loans from institutions like the World Bank and USAID. Saddled with debts they could not hope to pay, those countries were forced to acquiesce to political pressure from the United States on a variety of issues. Perkins argues in his book that developing nations were effectively neutralized politically, had their wealth gaps driven wider and economies crippled in the long run. In this capacity Perkins recounts his meetings with some prominent individuals, including Graham Greene and Omar Torrijos. Perkins describes the role of an EHM as follows:

Economic Hit Man (EHMs) are highly paid professionals who cheat countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars. They funnel money from the World Bank, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and other foreign "aid" organizations into the coffers of huge corporations and the pockets of a few wealthy families who control the planet's natural resources. Their tools included fraudulent financial reports, rigged elections, payoffs, extortion, sex, and murder. They play a game as old as empire, but one that has taken on new and terrifying dimensions during this time of globalization.

Perkins charges that the proposed conditions for this debt forgiveness require countries to privatise their health, education, electric, water and other public services. Those countries would also have to discontinue subsidies and trade restrictions that support local business, but accept the continued subsidization of certain G8 businesses by the US and other G8 countries, and the erection of trade barriers on imports that threaten G8 industries.

In the book, Perkins repeatedly denies the existence of a "conspiracy." Instead, Perkins carefully discusses the role of corporatocracy.
