Spain: Students demonstrate on the streets a day ahead of the education strike

Hundreds of high school and university students took the streets of Madrid Wednesday, to demonstrate against budget cuts for scholarships and grants, and increased registration fees.

Protesters gathered at the Puerta del Sol square carrying banners demanding the resignation of the Spanish Minister of Education Jose Ignacio Wert. Demonstrators also chanted slogans such as "we are the revolution".

Around 30,000 university students could not afford registration fees at the start of the last university term. Some universities are considering creating privately funded programmes to partially finance registration fees. The strike started on Tuesday and is expected to continue until Thursday. Similar protests were held in a number of other Spanish cities.
