Push for marijuana legalisation in Jamaica

Start 02:00 min.

Jamaica is the largest producer of marijuana in the Caribbean, but the drug is illegal in the country. But for many Jamaicans the drug is more than a product, rather, it is a religious right.

And as more states within the US legalise the drug, many say it is only a matter of time before this economically struggling nation follows suit.

The Story of Venezuela's Protests May Be Different From What You Are Told

In reacting to the protests in Venezuela, the biggest Western media outlets have drafted a charmingly simple narrative of the situation there. According to this story, peaceful protesters have risen up against a government because of shortages, high inflation, and crime. They have taken to the streets and been met with brutal repression from a government that also controls the media.

It doesn't take much digging to take down this narrative. First, while there have been some peaceful opposition marches, the daily protests are anything but peaceful. Read more.

Ecuador expels all Pentagon employees from US embassy

All Department of Defense employees at the US Embassy in Ecuador are being expelled from the country. Bitcoin, Anarchy and Freedom with Roger Ver

Money is the common denominator in our current financial system, the currency that facilitates all of our daily interactions. We take its existence for granted, and while the debate in recent years has grown to include whether or not the government should "print more of it" or "print less of it," the lack of comprehension about how dollars, Euros, yen, pesos and other government regulated national currencies are themselves the very root of the problem, conceived in iniquity and born as debt owed to the commercial banking system itself has prevented the conversation from moving past this infantile debate.

In recent years, mathematicians, cryptologists, computer programmers and others have been working quietly on the problem of how to create a system of exchange that bypasses the central banks and allows for instantaneous, pseudonymous, free transactions between individuals anywhere on the globe. Their answer: cryptocurrency, with its most well-known representative, Bitcoin.

Learn more about BItcoin, how it works, and where it's going from here in this week's edition of The Eyeopener.

UK secretly fanning flames of Syria war

When the Coalition Government was defeated in parliament over military intervention in Syria last summer many activists probably thought that was the end of the matter. After all Prime Minister David Cameron had conceded “the British parliament, reflecting the views of the British people, does not want to see British military action. What many people don’t realize is the UK was interfering in the Syria war before the vote – arming and training the Syrian insurgents fighting to overthrow the Assad Government. And although a US-UK military strike has been averted, the UK is continuing to support the insurgents. Read more.

Juice Rap News: Israel vs Palestine

Decades of failed peace talks have led nowhere. But do not lose hope just yet: join Robert Foster as he attempts to host the first ever Middle East Peace Raps, using rhyme and reason to bring together Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu, and a representative of Hamas.

We investigate the key arguments, counter-arguments and ad-hominems from both sides. But the picture would not be complete without a thorough discussion of "America's last taboo", as Edward Said once referred to it: the USA's role as Israel's best (and only) buddy in the world (Ok, together with Australia).

Featuring special cameos from prominent American Jewish scholar, Dr. Norman Finkelstein, and Palestinian rap legends, DAM, this is an episode for the ages. Join us as we bravely (or perhaps stupidly) take on one of the most bitter, divisive and controversial conflicts of our times: Israel & Palestine.

Putin warns of "consequences" if Ukraine military continues crackdown

Russian President Vladimir Putin Thursday warned of "consequences" if the authorities in Kiev keep up with their military action in eastern Ukraine.

The remark was prompted by Ukrainian military units attacking a checkpoint set up by pro-Russian gunmen outside the city of Slavyansk. At least five of what the country's Interior Minister called "terrorists" were killed. Putin has repeatedly chastised the government in Kiev for using military force against its own citizens.

RT's Alexey Yaroshevsky has more on this latest announcement by Putin.

New York Police Department’s #myNYPD Twitter Callout Fails Miserably

Even cops have to be careful what they wish for. The New York Police department asked Twitter users to share pictures of themselves posing with police officers using the hashtag #myNYPD — only to have their feed flooded by pictures showing police roughing up protesters.

Pictures of happy citizens posing with cops were supplanted by a wave of negative photos starting with Occupy Wall Street’s image of cops fighting with demonstrators carrying the message “changing hearts and minds one baton at a time.”
