Suriname’s abolition efforts called a regional boost against death penalty

PARAMARIBO — News that Suriname is pushing a bill to its National Assembly to abolish the death penalty has been welcomed as a boost by regional abolitionists who met recently in Puerto Rico.

“Suriname will soon abolish the death penalty in its criminal code,” National Assembly vice-chair Ruth Wijdenbosch told the annual general meeting of the World Coalition Against the death Penalty in San Juan last week. Read more.

Tensions escalate as Israeli force use live fire against Palestinian civilians

17 year old Palestinian Yazan Yacoub was shot in the chest and abdomen in Qalandya near Ramallah as the Israeli army continued taking punitive measures against Palestinians as a manhunt for 3 missing Israeli teenagers continue in the occupied West Bank.The army have further killed one man, injured dozens and arrested over 200 Palestinians.

Yazan Yacoub is now recovering from the bullet wounds. He claimed that he was unarmed and walking home from college when the Israeli army raided Qalandya.Hasan's family have been told that he will make a full recovery, however his father says the family no longer feel safe and worry for their children.
