Republican bid to derail Iran nuclear deal fails in US Senate
Democrats voted not to advance the measure giving President Barack Obama a major foreign policy victory. Republican Senators fell two votes short of the 60 needed to advance a resolution disapproving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
This means the disapproval legislation is essentially dead. Obama hailed the vote as a victory for diplomacy, American national security, and for the safety and security of the world. Republicans, lobbied by Israel, say they will keep up the fight.
The Senate majority leader has arranged to stage another vote on the measure. Republicans are also pushing to advance three bills aimed at pressuring Obama over his diplomacy with Iran.
