Saudi FM: Riyadh to continue supporting militants in Syria unless Assad steps down

Saudi Arabia has threatened to continue supporting foreign-backed militants in Syria unless President Bashar al-Assad steps down from power.

Jubeir also said Saudi Arabia would only support a political process that results in Assad’s removal. He made the comments after negotiations on the Syrian conflict ended in the Austrian capital Vienna.

Most of the participating countries agreed that only Syrians have the right to decide their future. Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari said foreign ministers of the participating countries are expected to agree on the necessity of respect for Syria’s unity and sovereignty.

Talks on the Syrian crisis started on Friday and ended on Saturday. The countries involved in the talks agreed to speed up efforts to end the conflict by setting up negotiations between the government and opposition parties by January and holding elections within 18 months. Read more.
