Spaniards stage anti-monarchy rally in Madrid

Spaniards have marched in the streets of the capital Madrid in a protest against the Spanish monarchy. Various groups and supporters of different political parties have participated in the rally.

The protesters called on the government to dissolve the royal family and declare a republic. Although the royal family’s function is purely symbolic in Spain’s political system, supporters of the anti-monarchist movement see the royals as the main part of the country’s economic and political problems.

The Spanish royal family’s popularity has slumped following a corruption scandal with links to the family members in the past three years.
