German FM: NATO war-games counterproductive

Germany has strongly criticized NATO’s policy on Russia, accusing the US-led military alliance of warmongering

Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier says NATO’s ongoing wargames in Eastern Europe are counterproductive and could fuel tensions with Russia. Steinmeier urged NATO member states to engage in talks with Moscow rather than conducting military exercises.

Nearly 31,000 NATO troops are currently participating in maneuvers in Eastern Europe close to Russia. The Western alliance is also planning to station some 3-thousand troops in Poland and the Baltic states.

Tensions between Russia and the US-led NATO escalated following the outbreak of the conflict in eastern Ukraine. NATO members accuse Moscow of supporting pro-Russian militias. But the Kremlin says NATO is using the allegations for eastward expansion.
