Basque country to seek more autonomy from Spain

Inigo Urkullu made the remarks while addressing the regional parliament as he was sworn in for a second four-year term. He said he planned to reach a future pact with the Spanish government to recognize his demands for independence.

Urkullu’s center-right party, P-N-V, won a regional election in September. The Basque Country is an autonomous region, with powers to raise its own taxes and to control policy areas ranging from education to health and jobs.

But the region is seeking to be recognized as a nation in the Spanish constitution, which would give it the right to decide to remain part of Spain or break away. Most of Spain's main parties oppose the independence drive.
