Vaccination: Commission calls for stronger EU cooperation against preventable diseases

Today, the Commission is issuing a set of recommendations for how the EU can strengthen cooperation in the fight against diseases that can be prevented by vaccines. This follows President Juncker's call, in his 2017 State of the Union address, for action to increase vaccination coverage and to ensure that everyone in the EU has access to vaccines.

Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Vytenis Andriukaitis said: ''Vaccination is one of the most powerful and cost-effective public health measures developed in the 20th century. As a medical doctor, I find it disheartening to witness children dying because of low uptake, vaccine hesitancy, or vaccine shortages. Infectious diseases are not confined within national borders. One Member State's immunisation weakness puts the health and security of citizens at risk across the EU. Cooperating in this area is in all of our interests. Protect our children, vaccinate!" Read more.

Uitgezoomd.

Ansarullah political leader killed in Saudi air raid

President of Yemen’s Supreme Political Council, Saleh al-Samad, has been killed last week in a Saudi Arabia’s airstrike in the western province of Hudaydah, the council says.

Yemen's official Saba news agency, citing a statement released by the Supreme Political Council on Monday, reported that the top political figure of the Houthi Ansarullah movement lost his life after Saudi jets bombarded his residence in the Red Sea port city of Hudaydah on Thursday.

The council also conveyed its sincere condolences to the Yemeni nation for the loss of Samad, an influential figure in Yemen’s resistance against a more-than-three-year-old war imposed by Riyadh on the impoverished country.

The council, Yemen’s top governing body, also appointed Mehdi Mohammad Hussein al-Mashat as its new chairman.

According to a report by al-Arabiya, a Saudi-owned pan-Arab television news channel, the Saudi-led military coalition, which has constantly bombarded Yemen since 2015, had offered a 20-million-dollar prize for any information that could help uncover the location of Samad’s domicile.

Russia, China to obstruct US attempt to sabotage JCPOA

Russia and China say they would try to block any attempt by the United States to sabotage the nuclear deal between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries.

Russian Foreign Ministers Sergey Lavrov and Chinese Wang Yi made the pledge at the end of their meeting in China.

Lavrov told reporters that Moscow and Beijing are against revising any international agreement. He said the two countries think the US withdrawal from the JCPOA would be counter-productive as it reduces years of talks to zero.

Iran’s Foreign Minister has also urged the European signatories to the deal to encourage US President Donald Trump to stay in the deal and begin implementing Washington’s part of the bargain.

Earlier, a top UN diplomat called on all parties to the Iran deal to comply with the terms of the agreement.

A battle for transparency: putting names and numbers to the US drone war

The Bureau has been tracking US drone strikes for seven years. Its work is now as important as ever. This is an extract from the Bureau's report, Naming The Dead, published in April 2018, written by Jack Serle

The phenomenal assassination tool that is the attack drone was born of frustration – the inability of the US to kill Osama bin Laden.

The CIA and its Afghan militia allies were pretty sure they knew where he was, training would-be suicide bombers in his Afghan hideout. Whenever they did get a read on his location, albeit briefly, it was thanks to the CIA’s small fleet of surveillance Predator drones. They could fly high and for more than 12 hours on end, constantly filming the scene below them and sending the footage back to the US. Read more.

“Since the illegal war against Yugoslavia in 1999, they [the US, the UK and France] want to have their own international structure,” Wimmer said. “They want to destroy the Charter of the UN. Read more.

Independent Swiss Lab Says 'BZ Toxin' Used In Skripal Poisoning; US/UK-Produced, Not Russian

Remember how we were told my the politicians (not the scientists) that a deadly Novichok nerve agent - produced by Russia - was used in the attempted assassination of the Skripals? Remember the 50 questions (here and here) we had surrounding the 'facts' as Theresa May had laid them out? Ever wonder why, given how utterly deadly we were told this chemical was, the Skripals wondered around for a few hours after being 'infected' and then days later, survived with no chronic damage?

Well those doubts may well have just been answered as according to the independent Swiss state Spiez lab, the substance used on Sergei Skripal was an agent called BZ, which was never produced in Russia, but was in service in the US, UK, and other NATO states. Read more.

Syria Under Siege: Guarding Against Wolves in Sheep Clothing

Vanessa Beeley & Eva Bartlett vs. Ethical Journalism & Human Decency in the Age of Social Media Reporting

Syria is a cultural, ethnic and religious mosaic of a country with Sunnis, Shias, Druze, Christians. Additional ethnicities include Syrian Kurds, Turkmens, Armenians, Circassians, Turkmens, Greeks, Yezidis, and Shabaks.

Syria is a nation under siege with multiple forces involved, from many sides, by multiple factions and nations. We have Assad’s Forces, Syrian Kurds, FSA, Al-Nusra, ISIS, Al-Qaeda, Hezbollah, Ahrar ash-Sham, Faylaq Al-Sham. And we have multiple nations and their bases: Turkey, Iran, Russia, US-NATO, Israel.

With so many factions involved, so many divided geographical areas, and so many diverging foreign interests, how do journalists go about factual and unbiased reporting on Syria? How can this be done through ethical journalism, but most importantly with human decency? How can outsiders sift through information and misinformation bombardment, and detect facts versus agenda and biased-based reporting? Read more.
