Ukraine’s Got a Real Problem with Far-Right Violence (And No, RT Didn’t Write This Headline)

It sounds like the stuff of Kremlin propaganda, but it’s not. Last week Hromadske Radio revealed that Ukraine's Ministry of Youth and Sports is funding the neo-Nazi group C14 to promote "national patriotic education projects" in the country.

On June 8, the Ministry announced that it will award C14 a little less than $17,000 for a children’s camp. It also awarded funds to Holosiyiv Hideout and Educational Assembly, both of which have links to the far-right. The revelation represents a dangerous example of law enforcement tacitly accepting or even encouraging the increasing lawlessness of far-right groups willing to use violence against those they don't like.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India is looking to revive a rupee trade mechanism to settle part of its oil payments to Iran, fearing foreign channels to pay Tehran might choke under pressure from U.S. sanctions, two government sources said.

During a previous round of sanctions, India devised a barter-like scheme acceptable to Washington to allow it to make some oil payments to Tehran in rupees through a small state bank. Iran used the funds to import goods from India. Read more.

"Saudi-led forces seize Hudaydah airport"

The World Health Organization has expressed grave concern over the ongoing fighting in and around the Yemeni port city of Hudaydah

The Incident Manager of the W-H-O in Yemen said the agency is importing additional medicines for cholera as well as other routine medical supplies. Her comments come as fighting rages on for the control of the port city. Meanwhile, the Saudi-led coalition has once again claimed that its forces captured the airport of the Yemeni city.

A similar claim was rejected by Ansarullah on Tuesday. Forces from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates started the invasion on the Houthi-controlled city last week, causing more deaths and destruction to Yemen. Hudaydah is the lone entry point for goods and essentials to the war-battered country.

F-Droid: The private, secure, free and open app store for Android

Most app stores encroach on users freedoms by closely monitoring and profiling how people use their devices. They reject apps which do not align with their terms of service. They are also unavailable in some of the worlds biggest markets, such as China, due to being blocked by the Government.

F-Droid is the open source app store for Android focusing on freedom, privacy, and security.

It doesn't track what you search for, what you install install, or what apps you use. It warns you about apps which track you or show you ads. The main F-Droid repository gives you access to over 2000 open source apps, and there are other 3rd party repositories which expand this even further. In addition, it is essentially unblock-able, making it a vital piece of infrastructure for activists and journalists who need access to apps to facilitate secure communication.

Over the last year, the F-Droid project has completely revamped its UI to make it more friendly to non-tech users, adding support for screenshots, feature graphics, and localized metadata about apps. We have also added several new tools to make it easier for anybody to setup and run their own curated app store. This talk will cover the various aspects of the project, focussing on the client, its security model, and how it is being used to ensure everyone is able to access high quality open source apps as the smart phone revolution continues.

This talk was given at Linux.conf.au 2018 (LCA2018) which was held on 22-26 January 2018 in Sydney Australia.

From amid the rubble of Raqqa, civilians are asking why US-led Coalition forces destroyed the city, killing hundreds of civilians in the process of “liberating” them from the armed group calling itself “Islamic State” (IS), Amnesty International said in a new report ahead of the offensive’s anniversary.

Amnesty International researchers visited 42 Coalition air strike sites across the ruined city and interviewed 112 civilian residents who had survived the carnage and lost loved ones. Read more.

Spanish PM Rajoy is booted out of office

Spain’s Parliament has voted to oust Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, over a corruption scandal swirling his party.

Rajoy was removed from office after he failed to garner enough votes to survive a no-confidence motion. The motion placed Socialist leader, Pedro Sanchez, with absolute majority to take power.

The no-confidence vote was proposed by the opposition Socialists. They accused Rajoy of failing to take responsibility for his party’s corruption scandal that includes charges of money laundering and tax crimes.

Rajoy’s chance of surviving the vote was minimized on Thursday after the Basque Nationalist Party said it would support the motion.
