Radioactive Art in Fukushima | Don’t Follow the Wind

The Creators Project heads to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster zone to get an exclusive look at Japanese art collective, Chim↑Pom's latest project "Don't Follow The Wind."

This group of installations feature the work of various artists and are housed by four buildings inside the exclusion zone, serving as a monument to the disaster and its ongoing consequences.

We sit down with Ryuta Ushiro and Ellie of Chim↑Pom, as well as featured artists Ai WeiWei, Trevor Paglen, and Eva and Franco Mattes to chat about how and why building this installation inside the radioactive space was essential in communicating the devastating impact of the disaster.

US airstrikes increase in a secret, secret war in Somalia, and no one’s paying attention

With so many little wars to keep track of, you probably haven’t noticed that the US has quietly been increasing its airstrikes against targets in Somalia. It seems few people in Washington have either.

In recent months, dozens of Al-Shabaab terrorist suspects have been killed by American drones and planes in Somalia, reportedly thanks to a surplus becoming available from Syria. However, in a familiar pattern, the US military has denied any civilians were harmed, while locals and aid agencies deny that denial.

A former US ambassador to Somalia told the New York Times: “It could be there is some well-thought-out strategy behind all of this, but I really doubt it.”

Another former US government official described Somalia as a “massive war on autopilot.”

In Rebuke to Trump, Senate Votes Again to End Aid to Saudi War in Yemen

WASHINGTON — The Senate on Wednesday again rebuked President Trump for his continued defense of Saudi Arabia after the killing of the dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi, voting for a second time to end American military assistance for the kingdom’s war in Yemen and to curtail presidential war powers.

The 54-to-46 vote, condemning a nearly four-year conflict in Yemen that has killed thousands of civilians and inflicted a devastating famine, sets the foundation for what could become Mr. Trump’s first presidential veto, with the House expected to overwhelmingly pass the measure, possibly this month. It’s Time to Tell the Truth: Israeli Journalist Gideon Levy Supports Ilhan Omar’s Critique of Israel

The House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a resolution Thursday condemning anti-Semitism, anti-Muslim discrimination, white supremacy and other forms of hate, following a week of debate among congressional Democrats.

The controversy began after some lawmakers accused Democratic Congressmember Ilhan Omar of invoking anti-Semitic tropes while questioning U.S. foreign policy on Israel. The House leadership initially drafted a resolution condemning anti-Semitism in what was seen as a direct rebuke of Omar.

But many progressive Democrats said Omar, one of the first two Muslim Congresswoman in U.S. history, was unfairly being singled out. The split within the Democratic Party forced the leadership to withdraw its initial resolution and then present a much broader one. Congressmember Ilhan Omar voted for and praised the new resolution in a joint statement with fellow Muslim lawmakers Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and André Carson of Indiana.

We speak with Gideon Levy, Haaretz columnist and member of the newspaper’s editorial board. His latest piece is headlined “Keep It Up, Ilhan Omar.”

Pre-IDF Brigades: Haganah, Irgun and Lechi

This week, we’re examining the underground militias that preceded the IDF and looking at the divisions that pitted Jew against Jew in pre-State Israel. Lechi. Irgun. Haganah. We ask who these groups were, what caused them to - briefly - unite and what led them to ultimately disband.

This is one of the more difficult periods in Israeli history and a subject that raises a lot of questions. After all, we aren’t talking about polite squabbles. This was real life-on-the-line-type of disagreements between Jewish groups that led to intimidation, violence and even assassinations and bombings.

The violence and actions of the period we’re talking about, from the 1930s to the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 showed the British (who ruled Palestine at the time) and the rest of the international community how important the establishment of a Jewish state meant to the Jewish people.

But did obtaining the Zionist dream come at the expense of morals, especially Jewish morals?

Age of Surveillance Capitalism: “We Thought We Were Searching Google, But Google Was Searching Us”

Corporations have created a new kind of marketplace out of our private human experiences. That is the conclusion of an explosive new book that argues big tech platforms like Facebook and Google are elephant poachers, and our personal data is ivory tusks.

Author Shoshana Zuboff writes in “The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power”: “At its core, surveillance capitalism is parasitic and self-referential. It revives Karl Marx’s old image of capitalism as a vampire that feeds on labor, but with an unexpected turn. Instead of labor, surveillance capitalism feeds on every aspect of every human’s experience.” Read more.

India to block Kashmir water supply from Pakistan

India has stepped up its response against Pakistan, a week after an attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 40 members of their security forces. A senior minister has announced that New Delhi will block the flow of its share of water from rivers originating in the disputed region into Pakistan.

Of the total 207 billion cubic metres, India's share of water from three rivers is nearly 20 percent. India currently uses 93 percent of its share from three rivers under the "Indus Waters Treaty". The other seven percent goes to Pakistan.

The World Bank treaty gives India access to three eastern rivers, and Pakistan access to three western rivers. India's decision will not affect Pakistan's access to the western rivers allowed under the treaty.

CDC’s Own Expert Vaccine Court Witness Confirmed Vaccines Can Cause Autism, So They Fired Him Immediately
